Dreamy Dresden

We spent this past weekend in the historic city of Dresden. It really feels like you magically go back in time because of the visible efforts spent in protecting the rich artistic details of this city. Despite losing its UNESCO status due to adding a modernized bridge, it maintains a wonderful identity: beautiful architectural restorations, lush gardens, fabulous museums, charming cobblestone quarters, Elbe river access, among other good aspects.

We mainly were able to see the Old Master Painting gallery, or the Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister, but no photos are allowed inside. In this way, it is quite different from Berlin's similar collection. Granted the building housing the art in Dresden is much older.

Dresden's central area is graced by stately courtyards, Baroque architecture, and even a moat. Inside the museums, Dresden owes its massive art collection to the foresight of Augustus the strong, who practically bankrupted his empire in the name of art collection. (Unfortunately the overcast sky made photography a challenge.)

We popped into a newly restored courtyard that was used for the care of horses. It had some great animal details and a sunken area to wash the horses:

On the right of the photo below, you can see the restored Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, a famous 18th century church that was mostly destroyed in the Dresden bombing during WWII. With much effort, it was rebuilt and is now a symbol of reconciliation.

Back in the main pedestrian area, we enjoyed exploring the Neumarkt, or New Market, which has many finely restored Baroque details.

The fountains and sculptures did not disappoint:

The following day we took a non-urban approach. We enjoyed a visit to an old water mill and surrounding nature area.

There was a cozy restaurant attached to the mill:

Along with a Biergarten/ Beer garden and a woodburning stove for bread:

Dresden is just 2 hours south of Berlin, and it has a distinctively different flavor.  Til next time!
