Schloss & Storks at Sunset

This evening we went to see an art exhibit by an established and talented watercolor artist, Hans Jurgen-Gaudeck. He has recently been featured in the local news for using his paintings to trace the path of the popular 19th-century German novelist and poet, Theodore Fontane, who traveled widely. The painter also has two books published featuring these visual journeys.

The watercolors were hanging in a small castle (Schloss) called Ribbeck, in a town founded in 1237. Although I did not take pictures of the artist's work, I was inspired by the evening sky on the surroundings.  I can see how light and nature influenced him to paint in this area. He painted an image of this castle as well.

Across the courtyard was a schnapps distillery with a large stork nest on top of the tall chimney! We waited for the parent stork to return to feed the baby birds. It was a remarkable sight. I've seen about 5 storks just this week outside Berlin- this is the most I've ever seen of these grand birds. Since they are a symbol of bringing babies, I'm loving this sign. We also saw a hawk, horses, and sheep along the way.

Henning took this up-close view of the stork guarding the nest:

Near the castle was a very old church and gardens. It was all pretty magical for a full-moon evening.

There's a special connection to pear trees (Birnbaum) here, as one was planted as a legacy to future generations, as described in one of Fontane's poems I think.

Here's the blogger at work...(Large and in charge, as I like to say.:)

In honor of the FIFA 2014 World Cup getting underway, here's a soccer ball shaped morning roll!

  1. I love the sky and the clouds and the light on the castle and of course how old everything is--and then the stork. Hooray.
