Touring in the Tiergarten

Long time no post! Perhaps you have heard, but unfortunately there is a Measles outbreak in Berlin.

This is obviously bad news, especially when you have a baby too young to vaccinate. :( The latest recommendation for people like us is to stay away from any crowds and rush-hour transportation.

So in order not to go stir crazy, I am walking in as many parks as possible. Today's outing was in the Tiergarten (animal garden), former hunting grounds of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was perfect; just air and trees and the great winter light. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

We first noticed some cute birds in a bird house:

Then on to many reflecting pools:

There were many classical-looking statues to admire:

Here are tributes to Beethoven and Mozart:

And of course, King Wilhem himself:

And lovely panoramas and green spaces:

Finally here's the Brandenburg Tor and TV tower in the distance. The park is easily accessible, in fact divided by, this main road. It used to be called Charlottenberg Chausee for the castle at its end but is now called "Strasse des 17. Juni" (17th of June Street). This date marks an East Berlin worker uprising in 1953 GDR. This grand avenue has seen everything from Nazi marches, to major football viewing events, to Love Parades...

  1. Gorgeous pics, E! So sorry to hear about Measles in Berlin. It is absolutely infuriating that people have stopped believing in the very science that has kept them and their families alive for SO MANY YEARS now. Don't get me started...Anyway, glad you and Frieda are getting some outdoor time in, looks lovely! xoxo

  2. These are absolutely lovely photos Ellie. They help calm my wrath at the measles outbreak in Berlin--and how utterly unnecessary it is. Recommended reading:

It's an excellent essay collection, blending her personal motherhood experience and the history of and importance of herd inoculation. I'm furious that you can't enjoy cafes and the company of strangers because of the selfish and idiotic belief systems of an ill-informed few.

  3. Henderson ladies, thank you! I am frustrated that our activities are curtailed. But more importantly, disappointed that Berlin has run into this avoidable and dangerous situation. Just want to keep safe at this point...Sigh.
