Schloss Britz and a 2015 Resolution

Well it is Sunday, so it must be time to visit another castle! Last week we were inspired to visit the Charlottenburg Castle, or at least the market right outside of it; today we went to see Schloss Britz, an early 18th century mansion and farm in Neukoelln.

This was also in keeping with my 2015 New Year's resolution of visiting one museum per month (at least.) This may sound moderate, but it's actually ambitious as a first-time mom with a four-month old. We had spotted a poster for a Goya/Picasso exhibit about the art of Spanish bullfights going on at this Schloss (castle), so it fit the bill. The exhibit showed how differently these two artists portrayed the bullfight: Goya, exacting and precise vs Picasso's swinging strokes. Yet they both relied on chiaroscuro, or light vs dark to tell a visual story.

The prints featured Goya's detailed depictions of bulls, bullfights, matadors, and related equipment. These were alongside photos of Picasso attending bull fights and Picasso's sometimes colorful or whimsical prints of bullfighting events and a few bull-themed ceramic plates. There was a small room dedicated to explaining printmaking forms like lithography vs. intaglio/metal engraving which I especially enjoyed.

Although we were not permitted to take pictures of the temporary art exhibition of 100 prints nor the interior of the house we took plenty outside! It was a beautiful establishment, including grounds with an animal farm, restaurant, outdoor theater and well-kept carriages. This is definitely a place to return to in warmer weather. They have a summer concert series too.

We explored the grounds first and then headed inside to warm up and marvel at the furniture, wall paper, rugs, paintings, and chandeliers. If interested, you can read (hopefully via Google translation) more about the castle and grounds here: http://schlossbritz.de/s/einfuehrung

Here's the front and back view:

Here is the wigged man behind it all:

The gardens were nicely maintained:

Parallel to the garden was a museum, cafe/restaurant and animal farm:

There were many neat old tools, fancy carriages and also newer structures, for example the amphitheater for concerts:

Situated only 30 minutes from central Berlin, this is a real gem. I am looking forward to taking our daughter there again when she's just a bit older so she can enjoy seeing the animals; she got a good look at the castle interior at least! Thanks for reading and happy 2015.

  1. What a find! I can imagine Frieda Grace running in the gardens and reaching out to pet the farm animals. Soon!
And what a relief to see the snow gone and the sun shining.
    Happy Outings.
    Love,
    Auntie Carol
